Tips on Packing

There are 15 travel tips in this category!

I routinely travel with a lot of stuff, and/or pick up stuff when I am overseas to bring home. Recently I have started using xs baggage services, especially in the South Pacific, and have had really good luck. It is far cheaper than the airline fees I was quoted, and it is so nice to travel without my luggage! They delivered door to door, and even cleared customs for me!

Always pack your medicines with you, in your handbag. You dont want to get to a foreign country without them.
Never carry empty shoes, they´ll bend. Pack all kind of bottles inside your shoes, previously rolled in plastic bags, or rolled underware.

It has become very important to know the airline luggage restrictions. The airlines are enforcing them to the letter so pay heed: a suitcase cannot exceed 62 inches (add once height, once width, and once depth, including wheels) and 70 lbs. Most airlines are charging $80.00 for overweight and $80.00 for oversize. Please note that if your suitcase is oversize, it is already heavy even before it is filled, so it could easily go overweight. That could mean $160 at the ticket counter, each way. You are better off with two smaller wheeled suitcases that fit the parameters and also will wind up holding more than the one very large bag.

When packing up clothes, roll your clothes into "logs". This helps prevent them from wrinkling. Fold your pants in half so that the pant legs are side by side. Then lay the bottom half of the legs in your suitcase, then put your rolled up clothes on top of the pant legs. Then put the top half of the pants over the clothes. This keeps your pants from getting a crease at the knees.

Remember to pack a "medicine kit". Pack to combat headaches, hayfever and allergies, nausea, stomach craps, etc. Also don't forget a few band-aids, especially when travelling with small children.

Young people have some specific ideas about what they wear, so let them help pack. Allow each youngster to pack his or her own suitcase and be responsible for it during your travels. You and the kids may need to compromise some some of the clothing they take, but allow them to exercise both their clothing choices and take-along accessories.
