The Ice House Cottage is located on the picturesque South Shore of Nova Scotia in the community of Mill Cove. From the deck of the Ice House you can watch the sea gulls and comorants, listen to the surf and relax. You can walk the Mill Cove Shore Road which winds along the shore past wharves, fish shacks, homes and cottages. There are sand beaches where you can enjoy the ocean waters on those hot summer afternoons of fish from the government wharf.

The owners, Janet & Wayne King, have done an excellent job anticipating their guests needs. They have included lots of extras from the down filled comforters to the refridgerated spring water. The things you don't notice at all will make you stay enjoyable. They have included all the comforts of home....colour cable TV and VCR, AM/FM stereo, phone/fax/answering machine, extra phone jacks for internet hook up, a stocked writing desk, microwave, coffee machine, toaster, kettle, teapot, dishes, lots of towels and linens, ample closet and drawer space, full size appliances, fans, hot water heating and a gas barbecue. The layout is open and airy and you can see the ocean from three sides. The second storey is one large bedroom with a queen size bed and a separate bathroom with a bathtub.

Close by the town of Hubbards has a grocery store and liquor store to stock the cupboards for your stay or you can choose to eat at one of the local restaurants.

The Trellis is a road side cafe with a menu including salads, sandwiches, main courses and deserts. It is also a bakery which is probably why their sandwiches and deserts are so good. They use whole wheat flour in their breads, pastries and deserts. It is a busy spot but a great place to stop for lunch. I personally recommend the carrot cake with cream cheese icing. It is very tasty. Their bakery goods can also be purchased to take home.

The Shore Club in Hubbards has been serving Lobster suppers for over 60 years. Lobster served with all you can eat salad bar, unlimited fresh cultivated mussels, potato salad and blueberry shortcake. If you or someone in your party is not a shellfish eater they also offer 10 oz. AAA Alberta Striploin steak. The Shore Club is set up in dining hall fashion and on weekends they host dances. They have a new curiosity this year. The trees in front of the Club have been deboughed and have taken on new identities. They are quite interesting and well worth a close look on your way out. My personal favorite would be the mermaid. By the way, they offer plastic bibs, but beware....it's a sure sign that you're a tourist and we love to watch first timers eat lobster.

The Hubbards Cove Inn Dining Room serves a short menu of tasty entrees. The Inn has a relaxed, elegant atmosphere with seating in the dining room, the sunroom and outdoors on the deck for those nice warm evenings. I recommend the seafood chowder which was wonderfully seasoned with tarragon and the Pasta Polo with Chicken.

The South Shore offers spectacular scenery and you are always close to the ocean. We enjoyed our stay at the Ice House and all the restaurants we ate at. Taking our time we chose the long way home and wound around the small communities of St. Margaret's Bay and Peggy's Cove areas. They have captivating views and lots of places to stop and enjoy the sea breezes. I highly recommend the Ice House for a weekend getaway or for a vacationer who is interested in spending a week by the sea.
